Robert Hur, the former US Attorney for Maryland who left office in 2021, will be tasked with conducting the inquiry into the handling of the materials after the White House confirmed that his private attorneys found a "small number" of classified documents.
“I will conduct the assigned investigation with fair, impartial, and dispassionate judgment. I intend to follow the facts swiftly and thoroughly, without fear or favor, and will honor the trust placed in me to perform this service,” Hur said in a statement after the announcement of his appointment.
Hur is now a partner in the Washington, DC office of Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher, and co-chair of the firm's Crisis Management Practice Group.
The initial inquiry was led by US Attorney John Lausch in Chicago, though he advised officials last week that the appointment of a special counsel was needed in the case, which led them to Hur.
Hur was an Assistant US Attorney in Maryland from 2007 to 2014.
While serving as the Principal Associate Deputy Attorney General with the Department of Justice in Washington DC in November 2017, Our was nominated by former President Donald Trump to be the next US Attorney in Maryland, which he became in April 2018 until he resigned in February 2021 to return to practicing law.
“We protected our traditions of integrity and continued our commitment to justice in the face of daunting challenges, including the longest federal government shutdown ever, tragic acts of violent extremism, and a frightening pandemic,” Hur said when he resigned.
“For an attorney—especially a first-generation American like myself—representing the United States is a weighty privilege and a dream job. I have been blessed to do so.”
According to his employer, while working for the US Attorney's Office in Maryland, Hur "prosecuted gang violence, firearms offenses, and narcotics trafficking, as well as white-collar offenses including financial institutions fraud, public corruption, mortgage fraud, tax offenses, computer network intrusions, and intellectual property theft.”
